Morpeth Town turned around an early 2-0 deficit to seal victory on the road at National League South Hemel Hempstead.

On a roasting hot afternoon, with temperatures in the mid-30s, both sides put on an entertaining show, but it was Morpeth who would edge it with an assured, controlled display after a torrid opening 10 minutes.

The Highwaymen found themselves behind almost immediately as they conceded inside three minutes, Michael Turner misjudging a bouncing ball that allowed Hemel’s number 10 to move into the box before slotting confidently past Dan Lowson in the Town goal.

It went from bad to worse on nine minutes as Morpeth conceded a second in the baking heat, with a Hemel player lashing a shot across Lowson and into the far corner.

The visitors needed a response and duly found it seconds later, with Turner atoning with a near post header from a Liam Noble corner to reduce the arrears.

With enforced water breaks around the 20-minute mark in each half, Morpeth used the stoppage wisely and found themselves level on 24 minutes.

Noble was once again provider-in-chief, bending a long ball over the top of the full-back and into the path of the onrushing Jack Foalle, who chipped the keeper with aplomb from the edge of the area to level matters at Vauxhall Road.

Although chances were being created by the hosting Tudors, Lowson was more than a match to their efforts, pushing clear shots across goal as Town saw the half out with the scores all level.

Academy prospect Bailey Geliher was on now and causing significant problems for the home side with a lively display, but it would be Connor Thomson who would score the decisive third goal. And what a goal it was.

The attacker cut in off the lefthand side before bending an effort into the far corner to complete the turnaround.

There was still a threat from the home side, with a substitute hitting the bar with a dipping long-range effort, but it would be as close as they’d come to an equaliser as the Highwaymen saw the game out to a successful conclusion.

After a sketchy opening, there were a multitude of positives to be taken from an excellent performance, one that bodes well for the coming weeks as we build to Warrington Town away on August 13th.

Town are next in action when they travel to Dunston on July 23rd (3pm).
