Morpeth Town 2-2 Ashington (Morpeth won 4-3 on penalties)
The Highwaymen managed to reach the Northumberland Senior Cup final for a second time in three years after being Ashington 4-3 on penalties at Craik Park on Tuesday evening.
The regulation 90 minutes finished 2-2 with the visitors managing to come from behind twice.
Will Dowling opened the scoring early in the first-half after his cross (or perhaps was a shot, but unlikely) evaded everyone and nestled into the bottom corner.
With almost 70 minutes on the clock The Colliers equalised when Craig Spooner ran onto ball that ran across the box and he rifled it across goal.
The game went through the gears as the time ticked down and with a minute to go, Nic Bollado saw his free kick – from 25 yards out – clatter against the crossbar.
The in the next phase of play, Morpeth thought they’d found the goal to progress when Jack Foalle headed in from yards out.
That was until five minutes into added on time when Nathan Buddle completely mistimed a header and saw his clearance go into his own net.
That was that, and the tie was to be settled from the penalty spot…
Morpeth took first and the first five were all dispatched, before the next four were all saved. Ashington scored the 10th to go to sudden death at 4-3.
Foalle stepped up for our sixth and scored, before Paul Robinson took to the task of levelling, but fired high and that was that!
Craig Lynch’s men will face either Heaton Stannington or Newcastle United Under 23s at St James’ Park in the final.
