Morpeth Town manager Stephen Turnbull was disappointed as his side exited the FA Cup at the Second Qualifying Round stage.
The Highwaymen had led until the 59th minute at National League North Southport FC, but conceded twice to slip to a 2-1 loss.
“I thought it was an opportunity to do well in the FA Cup,” said Turnbull after a match in which Morpeth missed a penalty.
“I never want to have a go at anyone but I thought we were poor today. Was the result a true reflection of the game? No.
“We were disappointed to miss the penalty and it was a real opportunity to progress into the next round. We’ve got a very good team but maybe four away games in a row has taken its toll on us.
Turnbull commented on another penalty opportunity squandered, the fifth in succession this season.
“Once you miss that many, you need to be superhuman not to let it affect you,” he added.
“If we go 2-0 up then we put ourselves in a very good position. But he’s had the cojonas to do it, unfortunately Jack (Foalle) has missed it.
“We’ve got good characters, a good team and we’ll go again next Saturday.”
Morpeth are next in action on Saturday when they host FC United of Manchester. All tickets are sold out for the game.
