Morpeth Town are delighted to announce the signing of highly-regarded versatile midfielder Ben Ramsey.
Having already scored twice for the Highwaymen, including on his first team debut at Hyde United, Ramsey has an outstanding reputation as a hot prospect earning trials at Stoke City, Sunderland and Gateshead.
After impressing during pre-season, Town moved swiftly to secure the signature of a player who has been at Chester-le-Street United and represented Morpeth Town in the FA Youth Cup 2nd Round proper.
“It’s a club that I’ve been involved with for a while now and I’ve always felt comfortable with the lads as well as the coaching staff,” said Ramsey about his move to Morpeth, where he sees familiar figures in Nick Gray and Steven Shaw, who he worked with at Park View Academy.
“Training full time has provided a great professional platform to train and play on a regular basis. I’ve been able to develop a lot during my time. Doing strength and conditioning sessions every day enabled me to compete physically against a stronger opposition, alongside the quality training sessions that played a big part in my development. But now, I want to play regularly at the highest level possible and show the coaching staff, and the fans, the quality that I can bring to this club.”
Ramsey has already needed to show the strength of character required to succeed in football, after a dislocated patella and a ligament tear while at Stoke City.
“There was a range of emotions that hit me after that injury, including disappointment and mainly frustration as my relationship with the club was already strong and I had my eyes set on a move to that club ever since the start; the injury put a huge spanner in the works,” he added.
“It set me back a good few months but you have to stay focussed on the end goal and do what you can to make a full recovery which is what I managed to achieve.”
Highwaymen boss Stephen Turnbull was pleased to get Ramsey signed on, and believes he has all it takes to make an impact in men’s football.
“I’m delighted to have Ben on board,” said Turnbull.
“I have been really impressed with him for a couple of years now, since he’s dipped in and out of Morpeth.
“He has bags of energy and is physically ready for men’s football and I’m certain he will be a great addition to the club.
“Beyond that, he is a good age and could be here for many years to come.”
Steven Shaw, our Head of Sports Science, has worked with Ramsey before during his time at Park View.
“Ben is someone I’ve worked with for three years and seen him grow and develop,” he said.
“He has been a bit of a star player at college level but he’s shown when he’s played here that he’s got the physicality and ability to play at this level.
“But he needs to keep working hard to make sure he can do it consistently; if he does that then the world is his oyster.”
