When Morpeth Town’s last major outing in the FA Trophy took place, no-one was there to see it.
Craik Park was eerily quiet in December 2020 when, amid a Covid-related nationwide lockdown, Morpeth lost 3-0 to National League Notts County in the Third Round of the same competition.
Fast forward to the present and club chairman Ken Beattie is anticipating a bumper crowd for one of the biggest days in the club’s history.
National League North side Boston United arrive, with a spot in the last 16 at stake for both sides. For Beattie, it’s a game that needs big support.
“We can’t wait for this one,” said Beattie.
“This game is one of the biggest in the club’s existence; we’ve never been to the fourth round of the FA Trophy before, but we won’t be settling for that.
“The squad we have, the excellent run of form we’ve been on and the current management we have in place all point to reasons to be optimistic about getting a result against Boston.
“They’re a good side, looking for promotion in the division above, but we’re hugely confident we can grasp the initiative and have a really good go.
“What we need is a big crowd to get behind us. We enjoyed having 1,000-plus on New Year’s Day and the lads drew motivation from it as we won 2-0.
“If we could get even more than that for this big game, we’d be delighted and in with the best chance of beating Boston while proudly representing the town.”
Town has been on a fine run of form, losing just twice in 23 games before Tuesday night’s trip to Ashton United.
It started with manager Craig Lynch taking over, with the Highwaymen going from bottom of the table in mid-September to mid-table currently under his stewardship.
“Craig, and his backroom staff, has done a fine job in turning around our fortunes this season,” continued Beattie.
“We have really pushed on and gathered momentum, enjoying some exciting successes along the way.
“Hopefully we can add another on Saturday.”
