Morpeth Town exited the Northumberland Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage after a 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United Under-23s at Craik Park.
Callum Roberts and Tom Heardman gave the visitors a two-goal lead inside the opening 19 minutes.
Matthew Grieve responded with a glancing header on the stroke of half-time before Mark Davison equalised six minutes after the restart.
Morpeth had chances to go ahead through Davison and Liam Henderson, but Dan Ward’s 76-minute winner proved to be a sucker-punch against the run of play.
The Highwaymen have a week to prepare for their League Cup second round match away to Penrith next Wednesday.
