Mark Davison’s first goals for the club helped the Highwaymen to a 5-0 victory over Newton Aycliffe.

‘Sparky’ netted a hat-trick of poachers finishes as Town beat Aycliffe for only the second time in 10 meetings since the visitors joined the Northern League.

Ben Sayer continued his fine run in front of goal netting is 4th in three games, Liam Henderson scoring the other with a fine finish from an acute angle.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, the first half an hour of the game was extremely cagey with chances at a premium.

The first attempt on goal came nine minutes is when Sayer’s free-kick was whipped into the six yard box, headed over by Jordan Fry.

In the 17th minute Morpeth went close again, Joe Walton firing just wide of the post.

With 31 minutes on the clock, the Highwaymen took the lead. Michael Turner breezed down the left wing before crossing low in to the area, Davison on hand to turn the ball home.

He almost added a second four minutes later, Sayer finding him on the edge of the area, his fizzing effort saved sublimly by James Winter.

A minute later full-back Stephen Forster found some space in the penalty area on the right. He shot across goal from an acute angle, Winter again saving sharply.

Defender Chris Reid was also denied by Winter in the 43rd minute, the ‘keeper palming away Reid’s header from a Sayer corner.

In first half injury time it was Henderson who went close. He brought a long ball down before leaving two defenders for dead with quick feet before hitting a piledriver towards the top corner, Winter able to save once again.

The second half continued in the same vein as he final 15 minutes of the first period, Morpeth dominating and creating a hatful of chances.

In the 55th minute Ben Sayer tested Winter with a long range effort, and four minutes later Walton hit a curling effort with the outside of his right boot just wide of the target.

Morpeth’s second came just after the hour mark after Henderson was hauled down on the right wing near the byline.

Sayer floated a cross towards the back post where Davison leaped highest to head home.

Nine minutes later it was 3-0, Fry fed the ball to Henderson down the right wing. He cut in towards goal before shooting from an acute angle, the ‘keeper unable to keep the shot out.

A fourth was added within five minutes, Davison finding Sayer on the left wing, the midfielder unchallenged as he advanced towards goal, scoring with a speculative 25 yard effort.

Davison completed his hat-trick in injury time, substitute Paul Robinson’s effort rebounding to him three yards out, the former Washington man tapping home.

The win sees Morpeth remain third in the EBAC Northern League Division One, with a vital mid-week showdown with leaders North Shields scheduled for Wednesday.
