Sam Hodgson is going to face many tests over the next nine months.
The midfielder fell to the floor after a challenge at Basford United, with immediate concern for his wellbeing from those around him.
The prognosis, recently confirmed to player and Head of Sports Science and Medicine Steven Shaw, isn’t good, with a length spell on the sidelines expected with a ruptured ACL.
It may have been difficult news to digest, but Hodgson is already on the rehabilitation road and eager to progress.
“I’m due in for surgery on March 31st then the expected recovery time to get on the pitch again is nine months,” said the midfielder.
“Naturally, I’m gutted. It’s the first long term injury I’ve had but I’m kind of in a place now where I just want to get started on the rehab process so I can set some targets.
“I’m sure there will be some low points along the way but it’s all just part of the process.
“Shawsy came with me to see the surgeon, and since then we have discussed pre and post op training.
“As long as, post surgery, it’s possible then I’m more than confident it will happen and I’ll return.
“I won’t be lacking in motivation or commitment.”
Set to see far more of Shaw than most, our sports therapist will be acutely aware of what is required to get Hodgson back on the pitch and fighting fit once more.
“Having now seen the surgeon, he is confident that it should be as straight forward as an ACL reconstruction can be, although no two ACL reconstructions are ever the same and exact rehabilitation methods will differ depending on the surgery outcome,” Shaw told the Highwaymen.
“We’ve been given a rough estimate of four to six weeks to get in for the surgery although that may happen sooner.
“It gives Sam some time to get as strong as he can before the surgery which will help in the long run.
“A general timeline for ACL reconstructions is a return to play around nine months post surgery but there is certain criteria to move onto each stage of rehab and nothing will be rushed.
“Sam’s work and family life has to be taken into account with a part time player, however Sam is effectively a full time athlete and really looks after himself.
“He is very professional in his approach.”
