Morpeth Town cruised to a 3 – 0 win over the previously unbeaten Hyde United at Craik Park. Goals from Ben Sayer, Micky Turner and Jack Foalle sealed the points to send the Highwaymen into 5th place, writes Sam Donovn.
Morpeth started the game on the front foot with Connor Pani forcing Gio Bellagambi into a good save.
Town went ahead on 13 minutes as Ben Ramsey did well down the left and his pass inside to Ben Sayer was taken in his stride but saw his first shot blocked but the loose ball fell kindly for him to rifle home.
Micky Turner doubled the lead on 23 minutes as he scrambled home a corner. A corner into the area caused chaos and the ball eventually dropped for the centre half to finish whilst on the floor.
The Tigers had struggled to find any rhythm in the opening half hour of the game but the closest they came was a deflected free kick from Jack Redshaw that Dan Lowson could save.
Just after the half hour mark, a cross from Jack Foalle was flapped at by Bellagambi and it dropped invitingly for Foalle but he saw his effort come back off the crossbar.
Hyde had grown into the game after being shell shocked in the opening half hour of the game but had little to show for their endeavours in the first half.
Morpeth started the second half by sitting a little deeper and asking the Tigers to try and break them down but they still lacked a cutting edge.
Jack Redshaw was denied at the far post after 55 minutes as the visitors threatened to find a way back into the game.
However, just as it seemed that Hyde were gaining a foothold in the game, they were hit with a sucker punch. Ramsey once again made good progress down the left and his ball inside to Foalle was on the money. The ball bounced up invitingly for the striker who launched an unstoppable volley over the head of the ‘keeper from fully 25yds.
Both sides had chances as the game neared a conclusion with Connor Thompson striking one narrowly wide for the Highwaymen and Javid Neavin seeing his deflected shot land kindly for Dan Lowson.
The best chance for the visitors was in stoppage time at the end of the game when a header from Roscoe was deemed by the officials to have not gone over the line despite their protestations.
Harry Pratt had one further chance for the away side but sent his curling effort comfortably wide of the post.
It’s a quick turnaround for the lads as they have their local derby at South Shields on Bank Holiday Monday, kick off is at 3pm.
