Morpeth Town Ladies leading scorer Orla Callaghan is revelling in something special taking place in the women’s team.

The lasses, only created as a squad in May last year, have been outstanding in their debut campaign, sitting top of the Northumberland Football League Women’s Division One.

A fantastic achievement on its own, the squad, being chased down by a Berwick Rangers side with games in hand, are aiming for promotion, something 31-goal Callaghan believes is very achievable even if they perhaps didn’t consider it back in the summer.

“Not at all,” said Callaghan when asked about promotion ambitions at the start of the season.

“I had my doubts because most players hadn’t played in so long. But we have all created amazing relationships and everyone gets on so well which makes it such a great environment to be in.

“We have shown in our results so far that we are very capable of promotion.

“When we defeated Cramlington United, who are mid-table in the Premier League, 3-1 in the cup, this gave us the belief that we could hold our own in the division above.

“If we carry on as we are, improving in each game, we are hopeful of promotion – that’s the target we are setting.”

Hoping to build on an outstanding start, the lasses are readying for a home clash at Craik Park with Whitley Bay Sporting Club on Sunday (1.30pm).

With free entry, it’s an ideal chance for you to see just how far the lasses have come in such a short space of time.

“It has been a great experience so far,” continued Callaghan.

“The team have all come together quickly and have formed a strong bond. This has shown through the success we’ve enjoyed in the first half of the season. We’re looking forward to seeing how far we can take it.”
