Morpeth progressed in the FA Cup on Tuesday evening following victory over City of Liverpool FC writes Sam Donovan.

A brace from Jack Foalle and Liam Henderson’s first of the season put the seal on a fine win on Merseyside.

The opening of the game was fairly with both sides looking to get the ball down and play possession football.

The first chance arrived on 18 minutes when Andrew Johnson got in down the left and fired a shot at goal but it was straight at Owen Wheeler in the home goal.

The hosts responded and Micky Turner had to put his body on the line to deny Jack Hazlehurst by blocking a shot with his chest.

Morpeth began to turn the screw as the half wore on with Liam Henderson seeing a dipping effort go over the bar.

On 24 minutes, Ben Sayer had an effort blocked after Johnson had again gotten free down the left, the rebound fell to Sam Hodgson but he fizzed it wide.

The biggest opening of the half fell the way of Liam Noble but the midfielder poked the ball past Wheeler but also the post to see the scores remain level.

Turner and Jeff Henderson both went close from corners as the game reached the 30-minute mark. Turner seeing a glancing effort go wide whilst Henderson nodded wide.

Those chances were not be rued when Jack Foalle opened the scoring after 33 minutes. Sayer was once again instrumental as a floated ball over the top released Foalle and he kept his composure to lift it over Wheeler and into the back of the net.

The game took a turn in the 49th minute when Thomas Stephens was given his marching orders as he flew in late on Johnson and caught the winger.

Morpeth continued to dictate the tempo of the game with the midfield dominating proceedings and pressing Liverpool back into their own defensive third.

Morpeth grabbed their second of the game and it was Foalle who grabbed his second of the game as well in the 74th minute. Henderson charged down a clearance and the ball broke to Foalle who was able to roll the ball under the advancing Wheeler.

City of Liverpool responded and had a great chance to reduce the arrears when Elliot Nevitt broke clear but the substitute fired over the bar when well placed.

The gloss to the game was added in the 83rd when Liam Henderson grabbed his goal with 7 minutes remaining as he fired home.

The Highwaymen are in action on Saturday when they make the long trip to Mickleover.
