“THAT was definitely my goal because the shot was on target.”
Sean Taylor pleaded his case after the Dunston UTS game as his late strike – via a huge Michael Hall deflection – sealed all three points at Craik Park. He might play it down and insist others should take the goalscoring spotlight, but for former Sunderland man Taylor, goals are part of the deal at Morpeth Town and every single one of them counts. He currently sits second in The Highwaymen standings behind the impressive Liam Henderson, but Taylor has his own target set in his mind and he is well on the way to achieving it.
“No, I don’t see myself as a top goalscorer this season,” Taylor revealed to The Highwaymen.
“My target is to get 20 to 25 goals this season but Liam Henderson should be looking to get 25-30 goals really. I have got defensive duties as well out on the wing and it is hard to get up and done for the full 90 minutes. Any goals are a bonus for me but I still want to chip in for the team. When I first came to the club I was a centre forward, I used to score 25-30 but now, I don’t know why, I am a winger so any goal is a bonus for me. Twenty is a realistic target because I have got 19 goals already this season.”
Turning into something of a versatile squad member, Taylor has featured in midfield, as part of an attacking trio and, for a brief spell, at left-back when covering for Chris Reid after his sending off against Shildon. Did he enjoy the experience as he gradually moves closer and closer to his own goal on the team-sheet?
“I played left-back against Shildon for a little bit and I didn’t mind it,” continued the midfielder.
“I didn’t get beat by the opponent. I played there for 10-12 games for Blackpool so I know the role well. I played right-back for Sunderland and that was my preferred role funnily enough.”
So what does he think about his progression from striker to midfielder to defender? The only option left as he moves back through the team is…goalkeeper.
“I don’t think I have got the height to be a goalkeeper but hey, why not!” he added.
If he’s as good at scoring goals as he is at goalkeeping then he’ll give Karl Dryden a run for his money.
