Morpeth Town Ladies are looking to make some noise in the forthcoming season as they gear up for a campaign at the highest level in their existence, writes Ross Jackson.
The ladies team has excelled since its founding at the beginning of the previous campaign, earning promotion in their debut outing.
Now, though, they face the challenges presented by NFL Women’s Premiership in what is sure to be a step-up.
It is one they are ready for, insists club captain Rose McLean, and one they are keen to confront head on.
“It would be great to be competitive at the top of the league and have a good cup run,” said the creative midfielder.
“We have amazing support and there’s more and more noise around the women’s team in Morpeth, so leading our home town through to the latter stages of the cup with friends and family watching on would be incredible.
“I think it’s important for young girls in the town to see us in those big moments, to inspire them to start playing too.
“We excelled last season and felt like we built a really strong foundation, especially in team spirit and togetherness.
“We’ve now added to the squad with some extremely skilled players who bring with them experience, so when we blend them with our existing talent, I feel we can go far.
“I’m relishing the challenge.”
What will that challenge consist of?
“More physicality, definitely,” continued McLean.
“In the cup games last season, we played against teams in that division that were tough, played at a quicker pace and you definitely knew you were in a game.
“Luckily the girls have applied themselves in pre-season and we are putting in the groundwork so that we’re prepared both physically and mentally.”
